Most sites obsess over backlinks — and completely ignore the free SEO they could get from links between their own pages. Internal linking is the most underused SEO lever.
Why Internal Linking Matters
- Distributes page authority — Every link passes "link juice" from one page to another
- Helps Google discover content — Orphan pages (no internal links) are often never indexed
- Improves user experience — Visitors find related content, spend more time on site
- Provides context — Anchor text tells Google what the linked page is about
The 3 Types of Internal Links
Navigation Links
Main menu, breadcrumbs, footer. Every page has these. They're important for UX but don't provide much SEO benefit because they're site-wide.
Contextual Links
Links inside the content body — like this one to my SEO services page. These are the most valuable for SEO because they're specific and topical.
Structural Links
Related posts, sidebar, "you might also like" sections. Useful but less impactful than contextual links.
Anchor Text Best Practices
- Use descriptive text — "SEO services in Pakistan" is better than "click here"
- Vary the anchor — Don't use the exact same text every time
- Front-load keywords — Put keywords early in the anchor
- Keep it natural — Avoid keyword stuffing
The Topic Cluster Model
The most effective internal linking structure is topic clusters:
- Hub pages — Main service pages (Web Design, SEO, etc.)
- Spoke pages — Blog posts, sub-services
- Both link back to hub — Creates strong topical authority
Example: This blog post is a "spoke" that links to my SEO services hub.
Common Mistakes
- Too many links — Dilutes authority, looks spammy
- Irrelevant links — Link to related content, not random pages
- Broken internal links — Check with Screaming Frog regularly
- Over-optimized anchor text — Sounds robotic, hurt by Google
A Simple Audit
- Run Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs)
- Find orphan pages (no incoming links)
- Fix broken internal links
- Add 3-5 internal links per new article
- Update old posts with links to new content
The Payoff
Sites with 3+ internal links per page rank higher on average. A 20% traffic lift from internal linking alone is common — and it costs nothing but time.
